SAINT PAUL – On September 26, Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon announced the winners of the 2022 Democracy Cup at an event at Metro State University. The Democracy Cup is the statewide collegiate voter turnout competition, in which campuses compete to achieve the highest percentage of students voting of the total population of students who are eligible to vote.

2022 Winners

  • The 4-year public state university with the highest voter turnout was the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus with 52% of students voting.
  • The 4-year public university with the highest voter turnout was Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall with 44.5% of students voting.
  • The 2-year public college with the highest voter turnout was Pine Technical and Community College in Pine City with 48.3% of students voting.
  • The 4-year private college or university with the highest voter turnout was St. Olaf College in Northfield with 67.6% of students voting.

Winners are determined by the college and university voting rate according to the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement at Tufts University. All four 2022 winners exceeded the national average of collegiate voter turnout which is 30.6%.

“In Minnesota, we vote - and our youth are no exception,” said Secretary Simon. “The 2022 Democracy Cup winners show that voting is a part of our civic culture starting as soon as youth turn 18. I am encouraged by these students who are ready and eager to make their voices heard and join our democracy and I urge them to spread that enthusiasm to their peers, friends, and family.”

The Democracy Cup is supported by the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State, LeadMN, Students United, Minnesota Student Association, Minnesota Association of Private College Students, and the All In Campus Democracy Challenge.

The National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement at Tufts University is the largest study of student voter engagement with over 1,100 colleges and universities enrolled. The study has been tracking voting data since 2012.
