Secretary Simon Statement on Dissolution of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity

January 3, 2018

SAINT PAUL — Today, Secretary of State Steve Simon released the following statement on the President’s executive order dissolving the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.

“This was the right decision for the country. From the beginning, I had serious doubts about the Commission’s credibility and trustworthiness. That’s why I refused to turn over Minnesota voters’ personal information in response to the Commission’s intrusive data requests. In the end, the Commission was a distraction, and it collapsed under the weight of the President’s false and irresponsible claim that millions of ineligible votes were cast in the last election.

I hope that we can all now re-focus our attention on the most serious national challenge to the integrity of our election system: cyber-intrusion from outside forces that want to disrupt our elections. There is overwhelming evidence that the risks of election-related cyberattacks are serious, verifiable, and growing. That ongoing challenge is where we need to concentrate our energy and resources.”
