SAINT PAUL – On August 5, 2024, Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt, and Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs co-signed a letter to X Corp. owner Elon Musk after the platform’s AI search assistant provided inaccurate information on elections rules – and then delayed correcting its own mistake for ten days, even after it learned that the information is had spread was false.
The letter urges the platform to ensure their users get accurate information on elections by redirecting questions about election administration to CanIVote.org - a nonpartisan resource from professional election administrators of both major parties - when asked about elections in the U.S.
“In this presidential election year, it is critically important that voters get accurate information on how to exercise their right to vote,” said Secretary Simon. “Voters should reach out to their state or local election officials to find out how, when, and where they can vote.”
